De Mandem Health Club: A Safe Space for Black Men

De Mandem Health Club is a dedicated “safe space” for Black men to meet, chat, and discuss their health and wellbeing.Launched in January 2024, the group has been going from strength to strength, growing into a thriving community of support and engagement. We meet on the first Monday of each month, providing a regular opportunity for members to connect and gain valuable insights into their health and wellbeing.

Our sessions raise awareness, knowledge, and understanding of Black men’s health issues, featuring guest speakers specialising in men’s health and wellbeing. In addition to our monthly meetings, we offer a Walking Group and a Fitness Group, encouraging members to stay active, improve their physical health, and build connections through movement and exercise.

In September 2024, we organised a Prostate Cancer Awareness Event, where our guest speaker, Mr. Raj Singh, consultant urological surgeon and Bradford Teaching Hospital’s Prostate Cancer Lead, provided expert insights on prostate health and early detection, furthering our mission to empower Black men with essential health knowledge.

Furthermore, members of De Mandem Health Club were consulted and contributed their views and opinions to the assisted dying discussions currently being held at the Houses of Parliament, ensuring that African and African-Caribbean perspectives are represented in this critical national debate.
